Welcome to my website and blog. A little bit of information about myself: I am a recovering newspaper photographer. I have worked for daily newspapers in Ohio, Indiana, New Hampshire and New Jersey. I most recently was on staff at the Herald Bulletin in Anderson, Indiana. For more about me go to www.richard-sitler.com.
I started this blog and website so that I can continue my work as a photojournalist and documentary photographer. I have realized that in my last job that most of my work has been published to the web and not in print. I have decided that I do not need a corporate-owned entity to publish my work online. However, I do miss the paychecks and medical benefits of my previous employers.
This website is called smalltownphotojournalist because most of my career I have worked doing community photojournalism in places that are mostly ignored by the major newspapers.
As the John Mellencamp song goes "I was born in a small town." My work that I intend to publish on this site will continue my work in visually telling stories of small towns and the people that make up those communities. I do not believe that small town is a geographic designation. It is more of a spirit. One can not judge what is small town by the size of a population. You can even find small town attitudes in the middle of a big city. To me small town is about community and people, and that is what my photography is about.
So, I will not be limiting the content on this site to one locale. In fact I will be posting blogs and photos here from a project that I am starting that will take me around the world. I will write more about that in a later blog.
Since I no longer am under the yoke of corporate newspapers, I do not have the regular paycheck. I hope to fund some of this work on this site through the sell of prints. To buy any photos seen in galleries on this site please click on the dotphoto link at the right. I will also post out takes there as well, so check out dotphoto for reasonably priced prints of my work - suitable for framing. Also suitable for gifts or scrapbooks.
